Selwood Keeps Faith with Mercedes-Benz

Selwood turns to Euro Commercials for its five new Mercedes-Benz pump-action heroes

Pump solutions specialist Selwood kept faith with the tried and trusted three-pointed star when making the latest additions to its all-Mercedes-Benz truck fleet. It was, however, the first time the Hampshire-based company has acquired its heavy vehicles from Euro Commercials. Key to the South Wales Dealer’s success in winning the order for five new rigids with cranes was the exceptional service provided over the last five years by its Van Sales team to the UK’s number one pump rental provider.

Selwood is also a world leader in the development and manufacture of pumps and related equipment, and provides general plant hire and sales services. It operates from headquarters in Eastleigh, and a network of depots nationwide. The company runs 54 trucks, of which 33 are fitted with Palfinger cranes – most are 26-tonners, although the line-up includes 10 18-tonners. Mercedes-Benz can also lay claim to approximately 80 per cent of its 137-strong van fleet.

The new arrivals are from the Antos range, which is purpose-designed for heavy-duty distribution work, and allies responsive, dynamic powertrains, with safe, assured driving characteristics. All have ClassicSpace day cabs. The two 6×2 Antos 2530s are powered by advanced 220 kW (299 hp) engines, while the three 4×2 Antos 1824s employ 175 kW (238 hp) versions of the same high-torque, 7.7-litre straight-six. Smooth, efficient Mercedes PowerShift automated transmissions contribute to the trucks’ impressive fuel economy. Their platform bodies, meanwhile, are by Bury-based PPS Commercials, and feature hydraulically-operated side safety walkways and fall-arrest systems. TH White, of Devizes, supplied and installed their radio remote-controlled cranes.

Selwood holds Silver multi-operating centre accreditation (MOCA) from the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) – its new trucks feature blind-spot minimisation equipment, cyclist sensors and left-turn alarms that meet the requirements of FORS and the Construction Logistics & Community Safety Scheme (CLOCS).

With a history that dates back to 1946, Selwood manufactures pump products for the water, environmental and construction industries, among others. The company’s success owes much to its ‘Proud to Deliver’ ethos. Its latest trucks transport pumping and ancillary equipment to and from customer sites. Allocated to branches across England and Scotland, they are now being inspected and serviced by the most conveniently located Dealers, under Mercedes-Benz Repair and Maintenance Contracts.

Selwood Transport Manager Paul Green said: “We’ve been running Mercedes-Benz trucks for more than 17 years. Not only have they proved to be supremely reliable and cost-effective to operate, but we also benefit from the outstanding support of the manufacturer’s franchised network. The overnight servicing which Mercedes-Benz Dealers provide is essential in enabling us to maximise vehicle uptime and thereby ensure that our customers continue to benefit from a seamless service.”

In the last year alone Selwood has also purchased 40 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vito and Citan vans from Euro Commercials. Mr Green added: “We ordered our latest trucks from Euro because of the excellent service levels it has provided in the past. At Selwood we are committed to delivering outstanding customer service, and we always seek to align ourselves with suppliers that share this philosophy.”
