RM Contractors | Setting up house

RM Contractors puts its faith in Doosan with a new order. Construction Plant News finds out more.

Since its inception in 1994, family run RM Contractors has grown to be one of the leading groundworks and civil engineering companies in the midlands and the Home Counties. As well as the headquarters in Worcestershire, the firm has a regional office in Oxfordshire.

Providing site preparation and groundworks for some of Britain’s leading housebuilders, the contractor’s catchment area stretches from Shropshire, Herefordshire and the Welsh borders, down to Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire in the south and to Weston-super-Mare in the west.

“We primarily operate in the residential market for the UK’s top housebuilders and can deliver a wide range of services from groundworks, bulk excavations, roads, sewers, infrastructure and section 278 works,” explains Managing Director, Chris Moen. “High levels of Health and Safety are a key pillar, and we hold both CHAS and SMAS Worksafe certifications.

“Our staff are at the heart of our business – we continually invest in developing their skills and expertise, ensuring we are offering the best service and quality. We have an experienced team of over 500 people and a large fleet of machinery including the new Doosan excavators, enabling us to take care of all of our client’s needs. This has enabled us to develop long-standing partnerships with our clients.”

It was that faith in the knowledge and judgement of its employees that was a major factor in the investment in 11 new DX-7 medium-sized crawler excavators from Doosan. The order is being supplied by Doosan Authorised Dealer, T H WHITE Construction, based in Stourport-on-Severn and comprises 10 DX140LC-7 14 tonne machines and a DX225LC-7 23 tonne crawler model.

“We decided to put a few different Doosan machines on trial from T H White Construction,” reveals Chris. “We were very impressed by the Doosan machines, but it was the comments from our drivers that really made the difference – they love the new excavators.”

DX-7 Medium-Sized Excavators
The DX140LC-7 and DX225LC-7 are part of Doosan’s new medium-sized ‘DX-7’ range of 17 Stage V crawler and wheeled excavator models from 14 to 25 tonne. Altogether, the new medium-sized DX-7 models provide significantly higher performance in every area than the previous generation Stage IV machines.

They combine enhanced comfort, increased tool carrier capability and novel operator assist technology, with new features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. Maintenance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has also been greatly reduced, with no maintenance required until the machine has operated for 8000 hours.

The new DX140LC-7 14.6 tonne excavator is powered by the Doosan D34 4-cylinder Stage V diesel engine providing 86 kW (115 HP) of power at 2000 RPM. To meet Stage V engine emission regulations, the new DX225LC-7 23 tonne excavator is powered by the latest generation Doosan DL06V diesel engine, providing 129 kW (174 HP) at 1800 RPM.

Comfort and controllability
The cab on the DX140LC-7 and DX225LC-7 excels in terms of spaciousness and ergonomics, taking operator comfort and ease of operation to new levels. As well as a new seat, the interior space offers more features as standard than other machines on the market, ensuring super controllability and high precision in all applications.

Other key new features in and around the cab include:

  • New 8in. Doosan Smart Touch screen, giving more information via a 30 per cent larger screen
  • DAB audio (Hands-free calling system and Bluetooth)
  • Keyless start (Doosan Smart Key) & remote door lock/unlock
  • Parallel wiper system and new design pedals
  • Improved air flow for defrosting and air conditioning
  • 8 x LED work lights as standard/4 more LED lamps as an option
  • AVM – Around View Monitor with 360° cameras (option)

The DX225LC-7 is also the first Doosan excavator of this size to feature Doosan’s innovative D-ECOPOWER virtual bleed off (VBO) technology, providing operators with higher productivity and around 7 per cent lower fuel consumption per hour than the previous Stage IV model, as well as smoother controls.
