WM Donald chooses GKD Technologies

GKD Technologies design electronic sensor technology and software for use as safety warning devices to protect people, machines and equipment in construction, earthmoving and rail industries.

Based in Netherley, Scotland, civil engineering and construction contractor, WM Donald, runs a comprehensive fleet of high-specification machines. The company is seen as an ‘industry pioneer’ and adopts the very latest in technology.

The company’s latest addition to its ever-expanding fleet is a new 40-tonne Doosan excavator, which WM Donald purchased from Doosan dealer, Balgownie Ltd, based in Aberdeenshire.

Willie Donald, who founded the company 42 years ago, maintains responsibility for key decisions, he said “ When it comes to selecting machines, there are a number of factors that influence the choice of any machine, and the level of specification offered in relation to price is vital. But of even more importance is the commitment to service and the proximity to the dealer.”

WM DonaldThe new Doosan DX80LC machine is fitted with a Trimble CB460 control unit transferred from his previous excavator. The new machine has also been equipped with a GKD Technologies height restrictor system, a purple roof beacon forms part of the 1HLi boom height restricting system.

Willie Donald reported that the GKD System was chosen partly because it is simple and effective in use. However, he added, that it provides an appropriate height cut-off even when the excavator is positioned on a slope, something that other systems can struggle with.

The common way that such systems work is that sensors measure the boom height in relation to the base machine. The GKD approach is the use of a single gravity referenced angle sensor on the boom, which measures boom height from the ground level. Upon reaching the pre-selected height limit, a hydraulic solenoid valve prevents any further lifting of the boom. The GKD system also offers an extremely easy set-up sequence. Its in-cab control module is a model of clarity and only requires the turning of a key to enter setup mode. The boom is then raised to the desired height limit and a one-button press saves this position and the operator gets straight to work.

The High spec Doosan went straight into service on a large residential development project on the outskirts of Dundee, the workload included initial site clearance and earthworks to facilitate the construction of an access road network and attenuation ponds.
