New Doosan Wheel Loader is a lynchpin machine at Tulloch Developments’ Stanley Hill Quarry
Lerwick-based Tulloch Developments, the largest civil and marine engineering contractor in Shetland in Scotland, has a history spanning three generations and more than 40 years. Formed by Peter Tulloch, the company had its roots in the building industry, completing many private homes and housing schemes for the local council.
The company grew by undertaking major building projects in Shetland such as the Whalsay Leisure Centre, Brae Swimming Pool, and Mid Yell Care Centre.
Today’s focus, however, is more on the civil engineering sector, and major contracts have included Cullivoe Quay, Uyeasound Quay, Petrofac SGP, Greenhead Berth 8 and the Mairs Yard Development.
The contractor has owned the Stanley Hill quarry site since 2012, where its crushing & screening equipment produces a wide range of products, including, MOT Type 1, Class 6F2, drainage aggregates, concrete aggregates, hardcore and sand.
It is there that a new Doosan DL450-5 wheel loader, supplied by Inverurie-based Balgownie, the local Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer, is being kept busy loading and stockpiling that material.
Tulloch Developments also provides an established ready mix concrete service, available to Shetland businesses and the public, using the company’s fleet of specialised trucks, and the new machine has also been tasked with filling the material bins used to supply the ready mix concrete system at the quarry.
With a bucket capacity of 4.5 m3, the latest addition to the Korean manufacturer’s wheel loader range is intended to meet a wide range of material-handling needs from loading and transporting aggregate material to industrial, mining and quarrying applications.
“The new machine is a lynchpin for us as it works for extensive periods in both our aggregates production area and in the ready mix concrete plant,” explains George Smith, a Director at Tulloch Developments.
“I have great confidence in the benefits that the DL450-5 Stage IV machine will bring in productivity and the fuel efficiency and reliability of the new Scania engine backed by the excellent support we’ve always had from Balgownie.”
The DL450-5 is powered by the Scania DC13 6-cylinder engine producing 257 kW (354 HP) of power at 1,800 rpm. Providing generous torque at low rpm, up to a 10 per cent reduction in fuel consumption, engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter, through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalyst reduction after-treatment technologies.
Additional Fuel Savings
When the operator does not give any input to the steering wheel, arm and bucket for more than 10 seconds – in applications, such as truck loading, where there is a lot of waiting time – the engine’s Auto Idle system is activated, saving further fuel by lowering the idle level from 950 to 750 rpm.
As in all Doosan Stage IV loaders, the Engine Auto Shut Off shuts down the machine after it has been idling for a specified amount of time (3-60 minutes, configurable by the operator via the control panel). This feature saves on fuel and reduces operating costs.
In addition to the Scania DC13 Stage IV engine, the external styling has been enhanced. Other improved features include a new high comfort cab, smooth and responsive hydraulics, a ZF powertrain, axle cooling and auxiliary hydraulic connections.
About Balgownie
As well as the full range of Doosan wheel loader models, Balgownie is responsible for sales and servicing of the same company’s crawler and wheeled excavator and articulated dump truck ranges in Aberdeenshire, Morayshire, Angus and for much of the Highlands and parts of Perthshire and Kinross-shire. The company is also the Authorised Bobcat dealer for the same area.
Balgownie started trading as an engineering company in 1907 in sheet metal work and tank manufacturing, supplying to shipyards, farmers and the food industry before diversifying into the manufacture and supply of dairy equipment.
Today, Balgownie is one of the leading specialists in Construction, Tractor, Trailer, Agriculture and Groundcare Machinery sales in Scotland.
New Doosan DL200-5 and DL250TC-5 Wheel Loaders
The new DL200-5 and DL250TC-5 Stage IV compliant wheel loaders offer as standard a number of features which are available only as options on other machines. With bucket capacities of 2.0 and 2.5m3, both wheel loaders are powered by new engines meeting Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and incorporating an electronic high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel delivery system, and a turbocharger with a Wastegate valve (WGT) installed to improve power and fuel efficiency.
The after-treatment technologies are cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) combined with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to reduce particulate matter (PM) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injection to minimise nitrogen oxides (NOx).
An expanded choice of options includes ride control; a double suspension (horizontal and vertical) heated seat; a 3rd spool auxiliary line; a reversing fan and a limited slip differential system. Manoeuvrability in narrow and confined space is assured by a compact design and, with the wide selection of attachments available, they can undertake a very wide range of applications, including work in sand pits, concrete plants, road construction, water and sewer projects, waste management and recycling.
