New Doosan Excavators join Garriock Bros. Rental Fleet
Garriock Bros, one of the biggest privately owned companies in the Shetland Islands in Scotland, has purchased new Doosan DX340LC-5 and DX225SLR-3 crawler excavators for the company’s extensive plant hire fleet. The new machines were supplied by Inverurie-based Balgownie, the local Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer.
Managing Director, George Garriock founded Garriock Bros. in 1975, when it started life as a small family joinery firm in Westerwick in the Shetland Islands and besides overseeing the overall business, he is currently developing the quarrying operation. Each division of the company has gained a significant market share through building strong trusting and long lasting associations with satisfied customers. Over 150 people are employed across the five branches and the company’s commitment to training is continual and ongoing. The company is CITB registered and is a member of the Scottish Plant Owners Association and the Federation of Master Builders.
The Doosan excavators are part of the rental fleet managed by the Garriock Bros. depot in Inverness (Muir of Ord) which was opened in January 2015 and is managed by Brian Buchan. The Inverness depot provides plant hire, sales and servicing and repair and currently supplies tracked and wheeled excavators, dumpers, compactors, wheel loaders and jaw and cone crushers.
“With our Inverness site being at the heart of the Scottish Highlands, we are in the perfect location to support clients in and around the Inverness area and North East of Scotland,” Brian explains. “The Doosan DX340LC-5 excavator is on hire to Breedon Group’s Boyne Bay Quarry in Banff. The DX225SLR-3 long reach excavator has been used on a range of applications including wind farms and piling work. The feedback from operators has been excellent on both machines citing the comfort of the cabs to the smoothness, stability and power the machines offer. This has been backed up by the great service offered by Balgownie.”
Providing significantly improved performance compared to the previous ‘LC-3’ Stage IIIB model, the operating weight of the 36 tonne DX340LC-5 excavator has increased by 1,300 kg, resulting in increases lifting capacities of 1 per cent and 5 per cent over the front and side.
The DX340LC-5 is powered by the Scania DC9 5-cylinder diesel engine, with an output of 237 kW of power at 1,800 rpm, providing a 13 per cent increase in engine power and a 4 per cent boost in torque over the LC-3 model. The engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies. As well as the Scania engine, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced that lead to significant reductions in fuel consumption amounting to an average of 6 per cent compared to the Stage IIIB machine.
Super Long Reach
With its super long reach capability, the DX225SLR-3 is an all-round machine, ideally suited for jobs such as excavating lakes, cleaning of settling banks, drainage work, digging in sand and gravel pits, slope forming or other long reach work. With an operating weight of 23.9 tonne, the unit is powered by the Doosan DL06K diesel engine providing 124 kW of power at 1,800 RPM. It has a bucket digging force of 149.0 kN and an arm digging force of 58.8 kN. The maximum digging reach (Std Front) is 15.38 m, maximum digging depth (Std Front) is 11.65 m and the maximum digging height (Std Front) is 13.08 m.
As well as the full range of Doosan crawler and wheeled excavator models, Balgownie is responsible for sales and servicing of the Doosan wheel loader and articulated dump truck ranges in Aberdeenshire, Morayshire, Angus and for much of the Highlands and parts of Perthshire and Kinross-shire. The company is also the Authorised Bobcat dealer for the same area.
Balgownie started trading as an engineering company in 1907 in sheet metal work and tank manufacturing, supplying to shipyards, farmers and the food industry before diversifying into the manufacture and supply of dairy equipment. Today, Balgownie is one of the leading specialists in Construction, Tractor, Trailer, Agriculture and Groundcare Machinery sales in Scotland.
