Meeting the strict criteria laid out in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s tender process a bespoke Volvo L110H loading shovel was ultimately selected to take charge of rehandling operations at its Nuffield Road Household Waste Recycling Centre located in Poole, Dorset.
The nineteen tonne loading shovel has been supplied fully equipped to tackle the task of rehandling domestic, commercial and green waste complete with a long boom option, hydraulic attachment bracket, a 5m³ Ulrich Hi tip bucket complete with a top clamp and solid wheel and tyre assemblies.
The machine also benefits from an array of options to protect it and the operator from accidental damage. For instance, the cab features a heavy-duty guard for the windscreen and guarding has also been applied to the headlights and taillights mounted in the counterweight. Due to increased incidents within the waste industry over the last few years the customer required additional safety features so an Ogden VMS radar system which prevents the machine from reversing into obstructions and the operator’s field of view is greatly enhanced by a Synergy high definition 360° camera together with a 7” monitor and recording system located in the cab.
Other options include an RDS Loadmaster weighing device, a Fireward 18kg dual agent automatic fire suppression system and single lever control for the boom and bucket functions. To protect the engine, the machine has a Turbo II precleaner fitted to the air intake and an automatic reversible engine fan prevents dust and debris blocking the cooling packages. The loading shovel has been limited to a maximum speed of 20KPH for added safety and a duplicate high tip bucket supplied as a back-up for when regular maintenance or repairs ware required.
The Volvo L110H is powered by a Stage V, Volvo 8 litre engine developing 190 nett hp with maximum torque achieved at just 1450rpm. It benefits from Volvo designed and manufactured driveline components designed to offer considerable fuel savings each shift. The Volvo Eco pedal, encouraging the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve, further enhances these savings.
The combination of the optional long boom and 5m³ high tip bucket allows the L110H to load high-sided bulk trailers with ease whilst the hydraulic top clamp ensures bucket capacities are maximised with every pass.
Commenting on the machine since its recent arrival at Nuffield Road, Fleet Compliance Supervisor Pete Wilson said; “So far we have been very pleased with the Volvo L110H, with positive feedback coming from our machine operators. The machine certainly looks the part and is performing well in line with our expectations.”
The new loading shovel is fitted with CareTrack as standard, which is Volvo’s telematics system that enables remote monitoring of a wide range of machine functions (e.g. location, fuel consumption, service reminders etc.) thus optimizing customer operations. In addition, BCP Council has opted for an SMT GB Level 3 OPTIMISE service agreement. A Level 3 service agreement means that SMT GB will take care of the full repair and maintenance of the machine with fully trained and experienced service engineers using genuine Volvo parts.
