Part of a £100 million renewal and enhancement project to improve the railway network in Scotland, Nationwide Platforms recently provided a range of modern truck mounted platforms to assist with the renovation of a Grade II listed viaduct spanning the M80 motorway between Stirling and Glasgow. The machines, supplied to AMCO Rail (Scotland), have working heights from 33 to 70 metres
The Challenge
With overnight road and railway closures in place, and faced with substantial penalties to ensure minimum disruption, various repairs to stonework and concrete supports needed to be completed on the Grade II listed viaduct in a quick and timely manner over a four week period.
The Solution
The use of truck mounted platforms eliminated potential transportation issues whilst assisting with ease of access. It also allowed the motorway to be cleared in a timely fashion and in case of emergency.
In addition to carrying out various repair work, AMCO Rail engineers were also able to mechanically prepare and paint all the steel reinforcements to protect them from pollutants caused by the high volume of traffic that travels under the viaduct each day.
The Benefits
By specifying truck mounted platforms with working heights between 33 and 70 metres, engineers were also able to reach the arches to the side of the motorway, which otherwise would have been difficult to access. The truck mounts also featured large telescopic upper booms and impressive platform capacities, which provided up to three engineers and their tools improved access to the exterior and underside of the eight-arch viaduct.
As the viaduct was listed, AMCO Rail ensured the work was planned and delivered sympathetically and with minimal impact as well as with minimal disruption for local residents and motorists. Additionally, a range of environmental and ecological surveys needed to be carried out, including investigations for local wildlife.
“Nationwide Platforms’ off-site support in the planning stage and during the onsite activities was second to none. It was also extremely helpful in assisting with the programming and completion of our works. The onsite team were courteous, helpful and always on time. Nationwide Platforms’ equipment was also of a great quality with all the latest safety features we would expect and more. The performance all round would lead us to have no issue with both recommending and hiring Nationwide Platforms in the future.”
