Duchy Plant Hire Ltd, based in Truro in Cornwall, has expanded with the purchase of 15 new Doosan excavators of various sizes from 2.7 to 25.5 tonne from Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd, based in Bridgwater in Somerset, the Authorised Doosan Dealer for London and the South of England including the Channel Islands.
The 15 new Doosan machines include a DX27Z 2.7 tonne, two DX62R-3 and a DX63-3 6.2 tonne and three DX85R-3 8.5 tonne mini-excavators, together with six DX140LC-5 14.4 tonne, DX225LC-5 22.1 tonne and DX255LC-5 25.5 tonne crawler excavators. All of the machines up to the DX225LC-5 are generally available for self-drive rental, with the larger excavators primarily offered as operated plant with highly skilled, fully insured and CPCS trained operators.

Company owner, Jamie Shelton, commented: “Our first Doosan machine was a second hand DX140LC-5 excavator purchased through Lee Sweet, our Area Sales Manager at Kellands. I was very impressed with the support provided for that machine by Lee and the team at Kellands and the Doosan machines we have subsequently bought from them. The service provided by Kellands is second to none, so it was a simple decision to build our latest expansion around the new Doosan excavators bought through Lee and Kellands.”
Jamie Shelton founded Duchy Plant Hire and Duchy Civils Ltd as part of the Duchy Group, in July 2015. The Duchy Group also comprises Duchy Demolition Ltd and Duchy Recycling Ltd. Duchy Plant Hire provides equipment for the other three businesses in the Group, as well as meeting the needs of the buoyant external rental market in Cornwall.
Jamie Shelton added: “We started our demolition and recycling businesses last year. Duchy Demolition has already completed several projects and is about to begin on some prestigious new contracts for the residential market in the county. We aim to develop Duchy Recycling more when we have the extra space available when we move to our new premises at Nanpean near St Austell.”

As a true zero tail swing (ZTS) machine (even with the optional heavy counterweight), the 2.7 tonne DX27Z offers the highest flexibility of movements when working close to walls, coupled with best-in-class 360-degree stability and a low weight for easy transportation. The DX27Z combines excellent performance characteristics with the largest cab for this size of machine on the market.
The new Stage V versions of the 6 tonne DX62R-3 reduced tail swing (RTS) and DX63-3 conventional tail swing models are powered by the Yanmar 4TNV98C diesel engine, providing a massive 22% increase in engine power over the previous generation models.
The DX85R-3 RTS excavator is powered by the same engine as the DX62R-3 and DX63-3, providing 44.3 kW of power at a rated speed of 2100 rpm. The DX85R-3 excavator offers excellent fuel efficiency, among the best in its class. The bucket digging force is an impressive 6.3 tonne and this is combined with a traction force of 6.6 tonne, whilst travel speeds are 2.7 km/h in the low range and 4.7 km/h in the high range.
The DX140LC-5 and DX225LC-5 – True Workhorses on Site
The DX140LC-5 combines enhanced comfort and controllability together with a range of features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. The Perkins 4.5 engine − at the heart of the DX140LC-5 − provides the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement.
Presented in the distinctive new machine styling scheme common to all Doosan LC-5 generation excavators, the DX225LC-5 is powered by the well-proven 6-cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine, providing a high power output of 124 kW (166 HP) at 1800 RPM.
The Doosan DX255LC-5 Excavator
The proven Doosan DL06P diesel engine is also at the heart of the DX255LC-5 excavator and delivers 141 kW (192 HP) of power at 1900 RPM. Depending on the equipment being used, its operating weight is around 25.5 tonne with a width of 3000 mm (narrow version) and 3200 mm (standard version). The Smart Power Control (SPC) system is standard equipment on all LC-5 models. It monitors motor and pump performance and limits unnecessary power use depending on whether the work to be done is heavy or light.
